Healthy Desserts: Indulge Without the Guilt

At Exquisine, we’re always looking to balance the decadent with the healthy. And you’d be amazed at the healthy options that exist within desserts. They may not always fit within your daily calorie counts or macronutrient splits, but healthy desserts can be super easy to substitute and integrate sparingly within a truly healthy diet.

Let’s look at the two primary ways that desserts can be considered healthy, as well as some simple swaps that can really surprise you with how healthy they make your favourite desserts.

Low-Calorie Options

We all know that being healthy when it comes to eating food is mostly about calories in versus calories out. The challenge with many traditional desserts is that they are choc-full (no pun intended) with calories. However, eating low-calorie options can dramatically help with weight management and a generally reduced risk of various health issues. A simple example of low-calorie desserts is anything fruit-based. Naturally sweet and super good for you, think fresh fruit salads with yoghurt and honey or any number of delicious baked fruits. You’d be amazed at just how delicious they are and yet how good they are for you too!

Higher Nutrient Variations

The other way that a dessert could be considered healthy is if it’s jam-packed full of nutritional ingredients. Sure, they might be slightly higher in calories than other options, but the health benefits from many of these ingredients can’t be overlooked. We’re talking vitamins and minerals that can be pretty hard to come by otherwise. These desserts could be things like Chia Seed Puddings (make it with almond milk and top with your favourite seasonal fruits for a perfect breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert), Avocado Chocolate Mousse (rich in healthy fats and antioxidants) or even Oatmeal Cookies (added nuts and dried fruits mean added nutrients). Needless to say, there are plenty of high nutrient desserts out there!

Surprising Ingredients that Make Desserts Healthier

One thing we absolutely love is the use of unconventional ingredients in desserts in order to make them healthier. We’ve already mentioned Avocado Chocolate Mousse (seriously, this is a must try), but there are so many other options. Black beans in brownies add fibre and protein, while also reducing the need for flour (needlessly calorific otherwise). Pureed cauliflower in cakes offers the same benefits plus added vitamins, and even Sweet Potato Pies make a delicious and naturally sweet options.

Tips for Making Desserts Healthier

So, what are some simple tips to remember at home? Easy: remember simple substitutions by swapping artificial or processed sweeteners for natural options, prioritising healthy fats over less beneficial ones and always aim for as many whole grains as possible. Just a few swaps can really make all the difference.
