Australia’s Most Iconic Chocolate Bars

From chocolate bars rich in history to modern-day favourites, we’ve delved into the fascinating stories behind each bar and ranked them by their popularity, so you don’t have to!

Freddo Frog

Starting off strong with the age-old classic – Freddo Frog. This iconic treat made its debut on the Australian scene in 1931 when an 18-year-old employee named Harry Melbourne decided his co-worker’s suggestion of creating a chocolate mouse was unappealing. Melbourne reasoned that women and children disliked mice, so he proposed making a frog instead, as children enjoyed catching tadpoles. The Freddo Frog quickly became a beloved favourite.

Cherry Ripe

It’s official, one of Australia’s favourite chocolate bars is now 100 years old! Introduced to the Australian market in 1924 by MacRobertson Steam Confectionery Works and later taken over by Cadbury in 1967, Cherry Ripe combines the chewy goodness of cherries, coconut, and chocolate. This delightful combination has remained largely unchanged over the century it has been on the market, proving its enduring appeal.

Polly Waffle

Next up is the Polly Waffle, another classic that has seen a resurgence in recent years. Originally created in 1947 by Hoadley’s Chocolates, this bar features a marshmallow centre encased in wafer and covered in milk chocolate. Though it was discontinued in 2009, popular demand led to its revival, much to the delight of fans who missed its unique texture and flavour.

Violet Crumble

Violet Crumble, known for its “it’s the way it shatters that matters” slogan, has been an Australian favourite since 1913. Created by Abel Hoadley, this honeycomb toffee bar coated in chocolate provides a satisfying crunch with every bite. It remains a staple treat, loved for its distinctive texture and taste.

Chomp

Last but not least, Chomp, a relatively newer addition, has captured the hearts of many with its fun size and delicious combination of wafer, caramel, and milk chocolate. Introduced by Cadbury, Chomp is perfect for a quick, satisfying snack that brings a bit of joy with every bite.

All of Australia’s favourite chocolate bars each tell a unique story of innovation and lasting popularity. Whether you’re a fan of the chewy Cherry Ripe, the nostalgic Polly Waffle or the fun-sized Chomp, these treats offer something for everyone.
